Balloon Boy (and Fam) Busted

Guess I’m one wise Professor. I actually felt guilty writing my last post a few days ago, questioning whether the runaway balloon was actually a publicity stunt (turns out it was two weeks in the making). Hey, you’ve got to give these folks credit for A+ public relations strategizing. Great story, extraordinary visuals. But the Sheriff is giving them an F.

Was Balloon Boy a PR Stunt?

I must admit, I was transfixed by the live video on my computer screen of the runaway Jiffy Pop balloon. When, where and how would it land? Would the six-year-old boy emerge unscathed or would he fall out somewhere along the way?

Like the rest of America (and the world) watching the story unfold before our eyes, I was thrilled to learn that the young Colorado lad never boarded the balloon but was hiding instead inside the family garage.

And then the PR cynic that I am read that his family had starred in a reality show this past year. Ugh, was this another Jon and Kate Plus Fate? Is Bravo or some other network just laying the foundation for The Amazing Balloon Race?

Only time will tell.

This is News?

I swear I am not making this up. The following breaking news story was posted on People.com.

After wrapping up the North American leg of her tour with two concerts in Las Vegas over the weekend, Britney Spears debuted her new single, “3,” on radio station Z100 Tuesday morning.

But that wasn’t enough excitement for her: On Wednesday, Spears purchased a pet parakeet.

If my name was Professor Media instead of Professor PR, I would flunk this editor.
